What Is a Bottleneck in PC Hardware?

A hardware bottleneck occurs when the maximum throughput of the slowest component in your system restricts the overall performance of other, faster components. In PC gaming, this typically manifests as low GPU utilization, dropped frames, stuttering, or an unexpected ceiling on your frames per second (FPS).

The Principle of Component Balance

A gaming PC functions as a continuous pipeline where every frame must be processed sequentially:

  1. Game Engine & Physics (CPU): The processor calculates game logic, AI routines, user input, and draws coordinates.
  2. Draw Calls (CPU → GPU): The CPU sends instructions over the PCIe bus telling the graphics card what to render.
